The first major investment made by The Pink Ceiling was a startup called Undercover Colors. This is a new nail polish product that can detect drugs in drinks. Date rape is a serious problem and there is not too much that has been done to help fight the problem. The product is still a work in progress, but Undercover Colors nail polish will change colors when coming into contact with harmful drugs.

The main drivers behind the recent phenomenon of customer service robots are software advances, stronger batteries, and cheap, more sophisticated sensing equipment. These robots often provide a touchscreen option, but natural language comprehension is a key element. The first try at programming a computer to understand natural human language was the STUDENT program created by Daniel Bobrow in 1964. Since then, steady improvements have culminated in software like Siri for the iPhone and Cortana for the Windows OS. What might come as a surprise is that different language comprehension programs are based on competing theories. Unlike understanding language, there isn’t much conflict in how to go about recognizing images. Convolutional neural networks, based on research stretching back to the 1950s into how animal vision systems operate, are used. Combined with digital cameras, this method lets robots add a personal touch to interactions with people by recognizing the faces of return customers.

The New Employee
Genuinely autonomous service robots only began appearing in stores around 2014. Among the early arrivals was the OSHbot created by a partnership between Lowe’s Innovation Labs and Fellow Robots. This five-foot tall rectangular automaton features front and rear screens along with visual capabilities that allow it to see and identify objects presented by inquiring customers. It can understand questions in several languages and escort customers to the desired merchandise. Similar robots began work in Japan in 2015 performing tasks like checking in guests, showing them to their rooms, and carrying luggage at the Henn na Hotel in Nagasaki. The expansion of customer service robots is also becoming easier due to companies like Aldebaran Robotics in France that manufactures the Nao, Pepper, and Romeo robots primarily to perform these functions. The Nao robot, only 23 inches tall, made its debut at the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ in April, 2015. Its job consisted of providing directions to customers. Its larger sibling, the four-foot Pepper, which has been used as one of the most recent innovation initiatives for Westfield malls, relies on wheels for mobility, while the Nao is capable of bipedal walking. As well as understanding language, Pepper is able to recognize human facial expressions to enhance communications.

A technology industry alliance devoted to making sure smart machines don’t turn against humanity says that Apple has signed on and will have a seat on the board.

Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Facebook, IBM, and Google-owned British AI firm DeepMind last year established the non-profit organization, called “Partnership on AI,” which will have its inaugural board meeting in San Francisco on February 3.

Apple “has been involved and collaborating with the partnership since before it was first announced and is thrilled to formalize its membership,” the alliance said in an online post.

Major technology firms joined forces in the group, with stated aims including cooperation on “best practices” for AI and using the technology “to benefit people and society.”

Creation of the group came amid concerns that new artificial intelligence efforts could spin out of control and end up being detrimental to society.

The companies “will conduct research, recommend best practices, and publish research under an open license in areas such as ethics, fairness, and inclusivity; transparency, privacy, and interoperability; collaboration between people and AI systems; and the trustworthiness, reliability, and robustness of the technology,” according to a statement.

Internet giants have been investing heavily in creating software to help machines think more like people, ideally acting as virtual assistants who get to know users and perhaps even anticipate needs.

1. The UAE’s state of the art probe is named “Hope.” 
The Hope probe is an engineering feat: it’s the size of a small car and features enough solar panels to power a small army of laptops. The probe is equipped with a camera capable enough to take full-color, high-resolution photographs. It also has both infra-red and ultraviolet spectrometers, which will collect data which will help scientists on the project study Mar’s atmospheric changes and climate cycles.

2. The UAE is working directly with NASA on this groundbreaking project.
The United States’ NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) signed an umbrella agreement with the UAE that leaves opportunities for collaboration between the two organizations on future space exploration. NASA plans on sending humans to Mars sometime after 2030, and the data provided by the Hope probe is an important piece of the puzzle.

3. Hope is the first interplanetary spacecraft to be built by an Arab nation.
Hope represents a new scientific frontier for the UAE, who is a top country in the space industry. This project marks a new focus for the UAE, who wish to usher in a new age of peaceful collaboration with the goal of further establishing the space technology sector.

4. It launches in July of 2020 from the Tanegashima Space Center in Japan.
The trip to Mars will take approximately 200 days and Hope will be traveling a distance of more than 60 million kilometers. It will reach Mars in the first quarter of 2021–which is the 50th anniversary of the UAE’s founding. Perfect timing!

5. 1000 gigabytes of new information about Mars will be gathered and transmitted back to earth in the span of two years.
The information gathered by the UAC will be important for the entirety of the space technology sector, whether it’s studying why Mars’ atmosphere is disappearing into space or cementing the space technology sector’s new place as the fastest growing industry on the planet.

Google showed off its master plan for a future built around artificial intelligence in May at the Google I/O conference. At the conference, CEO Sundar Pichai introduced a virtual helper that aims to make its search technology even more useful for you.

It’s a grand plan — in an interview in May, Pichai called it a “broad journey” — but we’ll have to wait a while longer until it comes into focus. Consumers won’t be able to even try out the Google assistant until the fall. Vivint is connecting its Sky smart home platform to the Amazon Echo, allowing customers to chat with the cloud-based Alexa.

Had a long day at the office? Simply say, “Alexa, tell Vivint I’m going to bed,” and the system will automatically turn off the lights, lock the doors, arm the security system, and turn down the thermostat.

“People have been dreaming of being able to say things to their house and have it obey for decades,” Charlie Kindel, director of Amazon Echo and Alexa, said in a statement. “Now that’s possible with Echo—just ask Alexa to turn up the heat, lock the doors, and more.”

Using Amazon Echo$179.99 at Amazon, you can find out whether doors are locked and the security system is enabled, turn on and dim the lights, and ask whether the garage door is shut. Connect the Echo to Vivint via the Alexa mobile app, then take control of your home using your voice, the SkyControl home panel, or Vivint’s app.

The smart home company also announced integration with the Nest Learning Thermostat, giving users even more ways to control the temperature. Current Nest owners can integrate with a Vivint smart home today; the thermostat will also be available nationwide as part of all Vivint Smart Home packages beginning this spring.

“We deliver a seamless integrated smart home, where the homeowner’s thermostat, door locks, video cameras, and security system all work together to make everyday life easier,” Vivint Chief Technology Officer Jeremy Warren said.
